modern kintsugi workshop

  • Cloud BV 276 Prinsengracht Amsterdam, NH, 1016 HJ Netherlands (map)

embracing imperfections

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese restoration technique. It involves repairing broken bowls with Urushi (Japanese Lacquer), then painting them with gold.

The concept is the acceptance of scars as history and the creation of new balance or new life. Kintsugi is a metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections. The philosophy of Kintsugi implies that we can become stronger and more beautiful in the process, even after setbacks in our life.

repairing pottery with a contemporary twist

For a modern method, we utilise two component epoxy glue to carefully piece together the broken pottery. Following this, we apply a coat of SHIN Urushi, a golden paint, and finish it off with a sprinkling of exquisite brass powder.

Please note that although the modern kintsugi method can create stunningly restored pottery, it is not suitable for use with food and drinks due to the use of artificial glue. The authentic method, on the other hand, is safe for use with food and drinks.

Pottery is not included in the price, but you can bring your own or purchase one at the workshop.

Disclaimer:

Please note that in this workshop you will learn the
modern version and not the traditional Kintsugi technique. The traditional way of using Kintsugi requires materials that some people are allergic too and requires a multiple day time investment. For interest in the traditional method please visit Yuki’s website.

Please also respect that we have a no refund policy within 48h before the event, in order to ensure fair planing for the organisers. We hope you understand. In individual cases please feel free to contact us.

The workshop needs a minimum of 4 participants to take place.
