solitude

CHANTAL SPIT

24.8.24 - 1.10.24

She could be herself, by herself. And that was what now she often felt the need of - to think; well not even to think. To be silent; to be alone. All the being and the doing, expansive, glittering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk, with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself, a wedge-shaped core of darkness, something invisible to others... and this self having shed its attachments was free for the strangest adventures
— Virginia Woolf

This collection of works shows women taking a break from their busy lives. It’s in moments of solitude that we can truly grow. When we meditate, reflect, or just spend time alone, we become more open to deeper connections with others. The women in these pieces are shown turning away or looking down, capturing a moment of stillness and quiet. This quietness may seem like inaction, but it’s actually a time to gather strength and prepare to engage with the world. Is this the calm before life’s storm?

On view from 24 August until 1 October.

Imprinted Notes

STUDIO BEA

5.8.24 - 23.8.24

Bea van Frankenhuyzen (Studio Bea) is a visual artist and designer with a bicultural identity. She moved from Romania to the Netherlands when she was seven years old. Her work is centered around rediscovering her lost identity and the search for the meaning of 'home'. Bea is interested in the quality and perception of colour, using the screen printing technique as a tool for painting. She explores how colours, shapes, and patterns influence and enhance the one and other. The dynamics between these elements reflects both inner and outer worlds, seeking to create a universal experience that surpasses language and cultural barriers.

Colour is a vital component in Bed's work, symbolizing the diversity and multiplicity of our identities. Bea carefully layers each nuance and shade, crafting refined tones that recall the vibrancy of her Romanian heritage.

The search for the right hue is a visual translation of her quest for origin and the merging of two cultures.

Lines, Bumps & Curves

MIGUEL LUIS CALAYAN

23.7.24 - 4.8.24

This exhibit is an exploration of our different anatomies and the ways they embody identity. It’s about the meanings we assign to the markings and contours of our bodies. What stories do we tell through scars? What about muscles? Or tattoos? How does the perception of one’s breasts affect their idea of gender?

These photos also dive into how the body gives an opportunity to declare one’s identity and regain agency. It’s not about maintaining certain body parts and certain aesthetics; it’s about maintaining control over the stories that we both tell and embody. Their bodies are maps. It’s full of bumps and curves, but they get to draw the lines.

The exhibition will be on view from the 23rd of July until the 4th of August, during Amsterdam Pride Week.

Join us for the exhibition opening on the 25th of July
from 6.30 - 9.30 pm.

Pollinators

Shaw.art & Studio Roof

1.5.24 - 26.6.24

We are excited to announce our upcoming exhibition ‘Pollinators,’ showcasing beautiful works of insects that play a crucial role in ecosystems by facilitating the reproduction of flowering plants through pollination.

In tandem with this exhibition, we will be organizing a number of educational workshops and events where experts in the field will teach us more on the subject and how to tackle the decline of these vital insects.

We will display impressive, large scale photo prints of butterflies and beetles by artist duo Monique and Patrick Shaw. The mother and son duo Shaw.art specialize in a laborious macrophotography technique called focus stacking, where many images are painstakingly combined for extremely detailed outcomes.

Juxtaposed with these prints, we will present colorful, handcrafted paper art insects made from recycled paper, created by Studio ROOF, a Dutch design studio based in Amsterdam.

Join us for the exhibition opening on the 10th of May 2024, 6 - 9 pm.

‘Pollinators’ will be on view from 1st of May until 26th of June.

  • During the remainder of the exhibition (May 1st until June 9th), you can directly support the creation of thriving pollinator habitats by making a donation at the gallery or via our instagram. The collected money will go to the non-profit organization ‘The Pollinators’, located in Amsterdam Noord. Find more information about them at thepollinators.org.

  • Imagine a world without apples, strawberries, or sunflowers. Hard to visualize, isn’t it? Without pollinators, there would hardly be life. Most of the world’s food production is dependend on pollination. However, bio- diversity is decreasing due to large-scale agriculture, climate change, pesticide use, diseases, and habitat loss.

  • The non-profit organization ‘The Pollinators’ is creating a healthy envi- ronment for pollinating species. Based in Amsterdam Noord at Café de Ceuvel, they build a community and platform that mainly focuses on supporting and connecting initiatives that protect and stimulate polli- nators and biodiversity. They are organising campaigns, activities and worshops for individuals, communities and companies, such as planting and sowing days for everyone to join.

The Act of Making

MAHOCHAA

7.3.24 - 30.4.24

Join us at Cloud on Thursday 14 March between 6pm and 9pm for the official opening of The Act of Making, a solo exhibition by Mahochaa.

Mahochaa (Kameliya Markovska, 1999) is an Amsterdam-based artist from Bulgaria.

She uses simple techniques, such as drawing and modelling clay by hand, to create detailed illustrations and objects. The complexity of her pieces is created by a repetition of patterns and movements.

Mahochaa finds inspiration within the natural world.

She recreates shapes that remind of corals, plants, leaves. Imitation of forms is a key element of her work.

The method of meditative repetition in creating the pieces brings her peace, allowing for thoughts to roam.

The products are the result of a process that doesn’t aim at creating perfect outcomes. Rather, they embrace the act of making. They emanate a quietude that is in consonance with the meditative nature of their inception.

The exhibition will be on view until 30 April 2024.

ANO STUDIO

4.11.23 - 14.01.23

In the world of ANO Studio, there's Hannah, the creative force behind the brand. She operates a design studio and online shop based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, specializing in art prints and illustration. Throughout her creations, a Japanese aesthetic permeates, demonstrating her deep affection for Japan, which continually serves as an abundant source of inspiration for her work. This love for Japanese culture, when blended with her passion for geometry and fine linework, defines what ANO Studio represents.

Sustainability holds great importance for Hannah. She diligently strives to incorporate eco-friendly practices into her work. For example, she opts for soy inks whenever possible and chooses recycled FSC certified paper for her prints. Everything in her operation is produced and printed locally in The Netherlands, including her recycled bubble wrap – a testament to her commitment to sustainability.

In the Japanese context, "ano" あの can be utilized as a conversational space filler, akin to saying "umm." It serves as a convenient way to navigate conversations, particularly when one feels a bit shy or hesitant, as Hannah sometimes does.

Losing Ground

art for artsakh

NARINÈ GYULKHASYAN, FLAVIA TERZIAN & GAYANE YERKANYAN

23.10.23 - 2.11.23

In response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Armenia, three artists of Armenian background—Narinè Gyulkhasyan, Flavia Terzian, and Gayane Yerkanyan—have joined forces to support the displaced population of Artsakh. This region, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, witnessed the mass expulsion of its people due to persecution, violence, and expropriation.

In just six days, 120,000 people lost their homes as Azerbaijani forces took control, following a nine-month blockade that weakened Artsakh's citizens. Facing dillemma of fleeing for their lives or staying under a dictatorial regime that for decades stokes hatred and aggression, the choice for Armenians of Artsakh, unfortunately, is a clear one: leaving ancestral land behind for freedom and safety.

Thanks to Cloud Amsterdam for presenting the selection of artworks that have been created for or selected as contributions to this cause, with proceeds going towards humanitarian aid.

Explore the artworks on the boundaries of graphic abstraction that come across as both strikingly simple and utterly complex.

Cloud x ASICS

photo exhibition for World Mental Health Day

SOPHIE EBRARD

9.10.23 - 16.10.23

Around World Mental Health Day, ASICS is calling on people to take a different approach to the definition of a "Personal Best.

Today, the sports world often revolves around striving for faster times, more reps, heavier weights or an even tighter body. This doesn't work for everyone. Research shows that many Dutch people don't have nearly enough self-confidence to play sports. The pressure to participate in this performance culture keeps many from going to the gym.

With the 'New Personal Best' initiative, ASICS advocates moving for positive, mental health, rather than for the physical picture. After all, your 'personal best' is not a number, it is a feeling.

Together with documentary photographer Sophie Ebrard, ASICS is capturing how exercise makes us feel. The portrait series is not about statistics, sports times or numbers to improve. It's about the feeling that exercise gives you. We captured this feeling in a photo series with Joshua Nolet, Hanna Verboom, Moïse Trustfull, Levi Rigters, Coco Sabajo and Gerrit Voortman.

A personal best is not how far you can run,

how fast you can finish,

or how high your score is.

A personal best is not a number.

It’s more than that.

A personal best is a feeling,

For some, it’s an incredible feeling

For others, it’s simply feeling ok.

So however you choose to move.

However fast or slow.

Let’s celebrate the feeling, not the number.

Let’s Take Care of Mother Earth

VERONICA HODGES

16.8.23 - 8.10.23

'Let's Take Care of Mother Earth' is Veronica Hodges' inaugural solo exhibition at Cloud Gallery in Amsterdam. Hodges offers a glimpse into the various captivating worlds that fascinate her, all inspired by nature. "Nature is an incredible force of diversity and beauty; form and color" says Hodges. "One can never get tired of drawing inspiration from the innovations of nature." The exhibition features depictions of jellyfish, butterflies, flowers, dragonflies, birds, and more.

The exhibition will run from the 16th of August to the 8th of October, with the closing event on the 6th of Octover from 6PM to 9PM.

  • Veronica Hodges (b. 1972) practices as a paper artist, creating installation works in public spaces. Her practice revolves around crafting large works in which viewers can participate, exceeding the proportions of the human body and thereby challenging the concept of volume. She is interested in reproducing motifs from nature. The paper, with its inherent quality of having a limited lifespan before turning to dust and crumbling, portrays the brevity of our existence on Earth as individuals. The material undergoes eternal transformation, which remains a constant fascination for the artist.

Her profound passion is to convey the theme of sustainability, emphasising how we can better care for Mother Earth and how we, as humans, relate to the utilisation of the Earth's resources. She engages in nature activism that encourages individuals to assume responsibility for their lifestyles, fostering hope for a better future.

“Hope is, for me, a crucial catalyst for change” says the artist.

"Without hope, we cannot develop as humans, and we need so strongly to forgive ourselves, take responsibility for our actions and move into a more mature state of mind, individually and as human spices. We need to embrace the pains and replace it with love.

We need to mature into awareness and grow with all our less pleasant sides of our selves. We need to act and respect the earth as an organism and not only our personal needs.

We are much more connected than we ever can believe when we are in our individuality.

Being connected makes everyone an important player for practicing love, compassion, and awareness.

It is time to wake up, and we are ready to embrace change to a new level of consciousness for humanity.

    Come and join me."

Pressed Plastic

MOYCA GORT

20.7.23 - 12.8.23

Moyca's work is characterised by the usage of elements such as material, shape, detail, print and color, which she extracts from objects she discovers in her surroundings. A significant source of inspiration for her are the things she encounters in her daily life, such as packaging and waste material. She continuously explores new methods of integrating these elements into her own work, which results in an unexpected image, surprising choice of material, bright colours and interesting layering and details. What fascinates her is how the meaning and function of an existing object can be transformed into a new image.

‘Pressed plastic’ is an ongoing series of collages of found and carefully selected plastic bags, edited with markers. Each collage is unique, and all the frames have been sourced from thrifted stores, and granted a second life."

found not lost

MERIJN HAENEN

1.5.23 - 3.6.23

Cloud proudly presents ‘Found Not Lost’, a solo exhibition by Merijn Haenen.

These ceramic replicas are based on mini plastic finds discovered on a Japanese beach. Colourful pieces of waste polished by the sea, shifting with the tide among lifeless corals and hermit crabs. They once served a function and were apart of something bigger. But now stand alone as one-of-a-kind pieces.

Merijn Haenen’s works are an invitation to explore shape, material, and color. He encourages viewers to pick up his works and examine them closely, sparking curiosity and inviting engagement.
